Tablecloth Sizes: How to Measure for a Custom Order

Measurement diagram showing tabletop dimensions and the drop on a round and rectangular table.

Quick answer

  • Measure the tabletop in the configuration you will use, including any extension leaves.
  • For a round cloth on a round table, add twice the desired drop to the tabletop diameter.
  • For a square or rectangular cloth aligned with a matching tabletop, add twice the desired drop to each tabletop dimension.
  • Confirm finished dimensions, fabric, edge finish and quantity before ordering.

A tablecloth order needs both the table measurements and the look you want. A reference photograph helps explain the style; measurements establish whether the cloth will fit.

What should you measure before choosing a tablecloth?

Measure the tabletop first: diameter for a round table, or length and width for a square or rectangular table. Record the table height separately if the cloth needs to hang close to the floor.

Use one unit throughout the inquiry and label every number. For extendable tables, state whether the measurements include the extension. If several table sizes need cloths, give each table group its own line and quantity.

Oval tables, rounded corners and unusual shapes need a sketch or photograph as well as dimensions. Length and width alone may not describe the edge shape accurately enough for a fitted design.

How do you calculate the finished tablecloth size?

For matching shapes with an equal drop on opposite sides, the basic calculation adds the drop at both edges.

Table and cloth arrangement Finished cloth calculation
Round cloth centered on a round table Diameter = tabletop diameter + 2 × drop
Square cloth aligned with a square table Side length = tabletop side length + 2 × drop
Rectangular cloth aligned with a rectangular table Length = tabletop length + 2 × end drop; width = tabletop width + 2 × side drop

Illustrative calculation, not a customer order: A rectangular tabletop measuring 180 × 90 cm with a 25 cm drop at each side needs a calculated finished cloth size of 230 × 140 cm. A round tabletop measuring 120 cm across with the same drop needs a calculated cloth diameter of 170 cm.

These calculations describe the intended finished size. They do not include manufacturing allowances. A square cloth placed diagonally, a square cloth on a round table, or a shaped cover will have a different hanging profile; confirm those designs separately.

How much drop should you choose?

Choose the drop to suit the table height, seating arrangement and intended appearance. There is no single drop that works for every dining room, wedding or display table.

Try draping a spare cloth over the actual table to see where you want the edge to finish. Check chair clearance, seated guests' leg space and whether the fabric could trail on the floor. If a floor-length look is required, include the table height and any desired clearance in the specification.

Are finished dimensions the same as cutting dimensions?

Finished dimensions describe the completed cloth; cutting dimensions must also account for the chosen construction. Buyers should specify the required finished size and agree how it will be measured.

Ask the supplier to confirm the edge finish, acceptable dimensional tolerance and whether the target measurements apply before or after the agreed wash process. Fabric width and the requested cloth size may also affect whether seams are needed. Confirm seam placement if an uninterrupted tabletop appearance matters.

Do not add a standard shrinkage percentage yourself unless it has been agreed for the selected material and process. Care instructions and any wash-check requirements belong in the specification, rather than being inferred from a photograph.

What should you send for a custom tablecloth inquiry?

Send a style reference together with measurable requirements. This lets Sleepbella assess the look and practical specifications together.

  • Tabletop shape and dimensions, with units.
  • Table height and desired drop or floor clearance.
  • Photos of the table and the tablecloth style you like.
  • Preferred material, color, pattern and edge finish, if known.
  • Quantity for each size and style.
  • Intended use, care requirements, delivery destination and required date.

If matching napkins are needed, list their sizes, quantities and any logo requirements separately. Use our custom logo napkin guide to prepare the artwork and placement details.
